LEDGA exists because South African businesses deserve better than foreign accounting software with a VAT field bolted onto the side.
Most small businesses in South Africa run their books on software designed for another tax system. It works, in the sense that it records transactions. But VAT is just a tax rate you type in. There is no VAT201. Nothing understands that you file every two months, or that SARS expects five years of records, or that a tax invoice has legally required fields.
So the gap gets filled by hand. A spreadsheet on the side to work out the VAT return. A bookkeeper re-entering the same figures. Month-end taking a weekend instead of an hour. And an uneasy feeling that something is slightly wrong somewhere in the numbers.
We built LEDGA the other way around. The VAT Act and the SARS forms came first, and the product was designed to produce them correctly. The result is software that already knows the rules you are trying to follow, so month-end stops being a reconstruction exercise.
Four commitments that shape the decisions we make about the product.
We start from the VAT Act and the SARS forms, then build the interface around them. That is the opposite of how imported software arrives here, where VAT is a configurable tax rate and VAT201 does not exist at all.
Plans are priced in rand, so a weak exchange rate does not quietly raise your monthly bill. Modules like payroll and receipt scanning are add-ons, so a sole proprietor is not subsidising features built for a twelve-person firm.
We do not sell data or use your books to train anything. Records are encrypted in transit and at rest, and you can export everything to CSV or PDF at any time, including after you cancel.
When you ask why your VAT201 shows a particular figure, you should get an answer about the VAT Act rather than a link to a generic help article written for another country.
Principles are easy to write on a page. These are the specific places our approach makes a practical difference to your books.
